Women’s Experiences of Historic Abuse

and Assault

Women in Canada are disproportionately impacted by gender-based violence including assault, unwanted sexualized behaviours, and homicide. These behaviours are rooted in systemic practices and societal beliefs of women’s inferiority and patriarchal attitudes that impact most living in North America, even with some of the progress our society has made in recent decades regarding gender equality. Women who have experienced gender-based violence also experience many common symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder including flashbacks, nightmares, numbing, and dissociation. Experiences of abuse and assault coupled with living within a society that views women and femininity as inferior, can significantly negatively impact a woman’s sense of empowerment and connection with a grounded sense of self, resulting in a lost sense of Voice. My hope is to support women in healing from these experiences in ways that support their sense of Voice, so that they may show up in relationships and in their lives in empowered and authentic ways.

I am a registered provider with the Crime Victims Assistance Program (CVAP). If you have experienced an assault and have reported this to the police, you may qualify for funding for your sessions with me through CVAP. You can learn more as well as access the application form here. I am happy to support anyone in navigating this process and completing the paperwork as needed.
